Walking Robots, the first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think of the word “robot”. But now we are closer than ever to seeing such robots walk beside us when we take a stroll through the park. So what are they exactly ? Well to avoid confusion this is the simplest definition I could think of, a type of robot that has mechanical limb like structures for movement and are often based on living creatures. So why create such complex machines when traditional wheels can do the job as well. Well, it turns out that there are plenty of advantages of walking robots over wheeled machines. So, we came up with the top five advantages of walking robots.
1. Easy movement
Most places are designed for humans to move around comfortably. But the same cannot be said for wheeled robots. How can you expect a car to climb up stairs? It’s absurd. But a robot with legs and ability to walk can easily move around in areas already designed for humans to move around in.
A walking robot can easily recover if it falls down. Since it’s on legs and arms it can reposition them to climb up if it falls down. But a overturned wheeled robot cannot do it as it does not have that degree of freedom that walking robots enjoy.
3. World’s best off-roader
A walking robot can move in any area whatsoever as it has a very high degree of freedom. But a wheeled robots cannot move in every environment as it can move on only two axis.
4. Be cost effective
The first step in any exploration mission or military operation is to establish communication. Roads and highways have to be layed down, pitstops and supply lines have to build, etc. this is time consuming and expensive. But with walking robots the need for roads and highways is eliminated, thus saving costs and time.
5. Something new
Wheels have been around for ages and that could be a bit boring. Compared to that, walking robots are very new and definitely something to talk about.
But that does not mean that these advantages come for free. These are incomprehensibly complicated machines. They are difficult to make and maintain thus making the initial investment very high. But with advances in this field by companies such as Boston Dynamics are opening the gates to the future. And the future definitely looks bright for these robots.
