‘WE CHOOSE TO GO TO THE MOON’
Those are the famous words of John F. Kennedy with which he started the Nation Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA. Today they are the world’s biggest space research organisation.
Now it’s been 60 years since they started. And it’s been an amazing 60 years. We have broken free of the earth prison, been to the moon, created a research lab in space the size of a football field orbiting the earth at a few thousand km/h and on and on and on.
So what have we achieved in those 60 years ?
1.Explorer 1, the First U.S. Satellite
So, Russia launches sputnik and suddenly they were ahead in the space race. And then the Americans were like damn it. They are ahead of us. Meanwhile the American counterpart, i.e. NASA has been having kind of a reputation for blowing up rockets and billions of tax dollars along with it. In such a situation, NASA finally launched Explorer 1, the first american satellite. Just 80 inches (203 centimeters) long and 6.25 inches (15.9 centimeters) in diameter, and weighed 30 pounds (14 kilograms). The satellite circled the planet 12 and a half times a day, its altitude fluctuating from 1,563 miles (2,515 kilometers) to 220 miles (354 kilometers) above Earth as it measured the cosmic radiation in its environment.
